課程概述

Authentic listening materials are employed to improve students’ communicative competence in real-life situations. In an effort to enhance students’ accuracy and fluency in speaking, this course entails students’ active participation in group discussions through which they are expected to learn how to summarize discussions and how to effectively organize ideas and thoughts in the context of shared experience. With oral presentations and application activities, students are expected to better listening and speaking skills and gain confidence in using English. To develop their reading skills, they will read articles on a variety of topics and learn how texts are developed and constructed. Also imparted in this class is the knowledge of grammar and rhetoric that is highly germane to students’ capacity to revise and edit their own prose.  

課程目標
The goal of this course is to improve students’ holistic proficiency in English. As often happens in the English education in Taiwan, most students spend much time learning reading and fall short of practice of listening and speaking, whereupon they can hardly have a good command of these two language skills. To address this issue, this course aims to increase students’ practice in conversational skills. For pragmatic ends, this course will also shed light on communication appropriateness in various contexts. 
課程要求
1. Quizzes: 2 quizzes on Listening Comprehension and Vocabulary. (Each 20% of final grade)
2. Individual interview: the final exam will be an interview (8-10 minutes) with the instructor. A resume should be prepared and submitted in week 15. Measured and effective responses are important in the interview. Be prepared for fundamental questions concerning your resume and purpose. Hemming and hawing will lower your grade. (30% of final grade)
3. Oral Presentation: Each week 1-2 groups (each group 1-2 students) will be responsible for a brief overview of the topic of their interests and for leading a discussion. (15% of final grade)
These presentations should:
* (1) Be about 20 minutes in duration, including PowerPoint show, better with pics;
* (2) Conclude with one question for leading a discussion.
* (3) Have a TA session in advance: You are required to have a rehearsal with TA in preparation for your presentation.
* (4) Apart from the bare-bones requirements, grading criteria for your presentation are as follows.
** Time control: You will have 20 minutes to give an overview of a specific topic of your interests. Ideal time control should be effectively realized through "rehearsals." With the intent to help illuminate the topic/issue concerned in your presentation, video clips, if any, and their lengths should be proportionally weighed - say, a 20-minute presentation is reasonably allowed to include video clips taking up less than 3 minutes.
** Familiarity with content: It is vital that you have your presentation down pat. Be ready for off-the-cuff questions posed by me or your peers.
** Accessibility: Delivery clarity and content coherence, with logical development of the topic, are pivotal of the success of your presentation. Excessive or illegibly types words on PowerPoint slides should be avoided. Concise captions and a few illustrative lines, along with oral explanations, are expected.
** Additional exposition: You should furnish explanatory notes for technical jargon in your presentation.
** Discussion question: To lead a discussion, you need to come up with a thought-provoking a question pertaining to your presentation, as opposed to a facile one incapable of sparking further discussion.
4. Application Activities and Class Participation: Group discussion and role play activities are important parts of this class. They are employed as approaches to improving your listening and speaking competence. Attendance and active participation in this class are central parts of the learning process, and all comments are points of view on class topics and related issues are highly encouraged. (15% of your grade)
